Marvista Weekly Message for Oct. 9

Marvista Weekly Message for Oct. 9

Hello Marvista Families,

Last week on the 5th the district family message included information about Highline's Race & Identity Instruction. This message comes as a follow up to that.

In the district message it stated, “your student learns about race and identity as part of their K-12 learning experience in Highline Public Schools… Instruction on Race and Identity is part of School Board Policy 0010: Equity, Race and Identity, adopted by the School Board in November 2019. From grades K through12, students learn key ideas from a variety of perspectives to understand why and how race and identity play a role in shaping our society. While this is not new in Highline, we have recently aligned this instruction with the Social Justice Standards developed by Teaching Tolerance.”

Our school was the first in Highline to use the new standards before they were adopted by the board three years ago. We strongly believe in the standards and the goals of the district to teach anti-racism content. We recently created a page on our school website with a great deal of content including resources we hope will help families to follow up on this learning at home. That information can be found here

The curriculum is developed in collaboration with families and community through a community advisory council made up of students, families, and community members who join the Instruction on Race and Identity design team two to three times per year to provide feedback on all components of the curriculum. If you would like to join the Instruction on Race and Identity Community Advisory Council, please complete this form. For more information, please contact Adriana Lara-Espinosa, Executive Assistant of Teaching and Learning.

Have a great week!
