Hello Marvista Families,
For the past several years we have held an annual Unity Day. One of the primary purposes of Unity Day has been to make clear to students that everyone of them, regardless of their heritage, their identity, what language they speak, what religion they believe in, what political party their family affiliates with, etc. are welcome at our school. With so much division in the world, this was one day when we wanted to emphasize unity and belonging. We also emphasized how fortunate we are to be in a place that is so rich in diversity.
Due to distance learning, we cannot gather and hold our typical assembly to kick of this special day so teachers will show a video in their classrooms on Unity Day instead that attempts to recreate our typical Unity Day parade and assembly. In classrooms, teachers will follow the video with other activities and discussions to build on the concept of unity.
Next week we will also honor and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Junior in classrooms. While a special day is designated to honor Dr. King, we make it a priority to celebrate Black History all year round, not just on MLK Day and during Black History Month. This instruction will occur during our morning meeting/class meeting time.
If you are interested in watching our Unity Day video, we will send it out on Wednesday evening.
Best wishes,
Melissa Pointer
